Florida dentist sentenced for sending over 100 threats to public figures based on their political views

TAMPA, Fla. – A Florida dentist has been sentenced to serve two years in prison after law enforcement discovered him threatening public figures, an election official, and others based on their political views between 2019 and 2024.

According to the Department of Justice, Richard Glenn Kantwill, 61, of Tampa, sent over 100 threats through Facebook, Instagram, email, and texts to “various public figures” including an author, religious figure, and television personality.

"Kantwill also sent at least seven additional threats to four public figures via Facebook from April 2022 to April 2024, including a threat to an election official in another state in February 2024," the DOJ said.

According to South Florida’s Local 10.com, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland referred to Kantwill’s messages as an “almost year-long campaign of terror.”

The news organization adds that Kantwill was born in Chicago, served as a U.S. Army combat field medic during the Gulf War, and practiced dentistry in Tampa.

Following an FBI investigation, Kantwill pleaded guilty in November to four counts of interstate transmission of a threat.

Kantwill’s attorneys claimed he lived with untreated post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism.

He has been in jail without bond for about eight months and will be paroled in three years. Additionally, Kantwill must pay a $10,000 fine and get treatment for mental health and substance abuse, Local10.com reported.
