Car nearly swallowed by sinkhole in St. Johns

Crash into hydrant at Islesbrook and South Durbin parkways creates sinkhole

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A car was nearly swallowed by a sinkhole that opened up as the result of a crash Monday night, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

A car struck a fire hydrant about 9 p.m., causing the damage and closing all but one lane at Islesbrook and South Durbin parkways until the JEA arrived, repaired the hydrant and filled the hole.

The name of the driver and whether there would be any charges were not yet released.

Tuesday morning, a small part of the road remained blocked until it could be repaved.
