Section of beach closed to traffic due to soft sand

Crescent Beach ramp to Fort Matanzas ramp closed to vehicles

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A section of beach in St. Johns County has been closed to driving due to extremely soft sand, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said.

The closure is between the Crescent Beach ramp and the Fort Matanzas ramp.

The closure was initiated after several 4x4 vehicles became stuck in the area as beach conditions deteriorated, officials said.

Soft sand conditions are caused by a combination of factors. A lack of rain makes it hard for the sand to pack, and a lack of onshore winds means there is no wind to push waves on the shore. Cars driving on soft sand also contributes the problem, making it harder for the sand to pack.

Officials will monitor beach conditions daily and reopen traffic on the beach as soon as possible.

Vilano Beach and Porpoise Point are still closed to vehicular traffic due to a beach re-nourishment project.
