Victim in Julington Creek road-rage shooting gives account

Man and woman shot are both recovering

JULINGTON CREEK, Fla. – New details surfaced Monday in the road-rage shooting incident that happened in a Julington Creek parking lot Friday.

The shooting happened just after 11 a.m. near a Publix shopping center near Julington Creek, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A few minutes after occupants of the two vehicles got into an argument while driving, they pulled into a bank parking lot and got into a physical confrontation. After getting back in the vehicles and circling around, deputies said that Charles Michael Mohr, 22, fired several shots into the second vehicle when it circled around.

Travis Averett, 21, told News4Jax reporter Jim Piggott he was dropping Aaliyah Green, 21, off at work when Mohr started honking his horn at them while they were pulling into the parking lot.

Averett said he and Green got out of the car and Mohr came up to him and shoved him. Averette said that’s why he punched Mohr in the face.

Averette said after the fight, they both got into the car and left. He said Mohr then came out with a gun and started shooting at them.

Police started getting numerous 911 calls from people who heard and saw the shooting.

Below is an excerpt from one of the 911 calls:

Caller: There was gunshot fire at 2750 Race Track Road
Operator: Has anybody been shot? Or did you just hear shots?
Caller: There were several shots. Come in (speaking to another witness). Come in
Caller: There is a man shooting. He is in the shopping lot now. He's got his hands up and he is waving at people.

It was shortly after that when people began to realize an employee from a local auto service center was holding Mohr at gunpoint until police arrived.

Caller: It’s a Tuffy employee who has a gun on him.
Operator: Who has a gun on him?
Caller: A Tuffy employee has a gun on him.

According to an affidavit, Mohr's gun had a 15-round capacity which was emptied when officers found it. It's uncertain how many shots were fired into the car.

The affidavit adds that Mohr admitted to police that he was trying to shoot Averette, Green and a third occupant.

The third person in the car drove  Averett and Green to Baptist South. Both were transferred to UF Health Jacksonville, where they were reported in critical condition.

Averette was shot four times and is recovering. He said Green was shot in the back of the head and has been released from the hospital.
