Data released Thursday from the Georgia Department of Public Health shows the highest single-day rise of reported COVID-19 cases in the state recorded so far, specifically 7,958 new cases.
That’s over 1,700 more than the 6,242 cases reported Tuesday, which was the previous record for highest single-day rise in the state.

Of those cases reported Thursday, 86 were in the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax.
As of Thursday, a total of 531,954 confirmed cases had been reported by the state Department of Public Health.
The agency on Thursday reported 54 additional confirmed deaths related to COVID-19 bringing the state’s total to 9,607 confirmed deaths since the start of the pandemic.
According to the state Department of Public Health, 5,135,306 tests have been performed in the state, which had a 9.8% positivity rate, as of Thursday.
Georgia was reporting a total of 86,622 antigen positive cases and 975 “probable” deaths on Thursday. For more on those categories, click here.

On Thursday, 400 additional hospitalizations were reported, bringing the state’s total to 40,539 since the outbreak began.
