Georgia trial over voting complaints begins Monday

Abrams-backed election lawsuit goes to trial

The Georgia State Board of Elections plans to appoint a review panel this week as part of a process that could lead to a takeover of elections in the state's most populous county under a provision in the state's sweeping new election law. Republican lawmakers cited the new law when they asked the state board last month to appoint the performance review board to investigate Fulton County's handling of elections. A trial about voting complaints in the 2018 and 2020 elections began Monday.

The group “Fair Fight” argued Georgia’s election policies illegally obstructed voters from casting their ballots.

Democrat Stacey Abrams founded the group after losing to Republican governor Brian Kemp.

The plaintiffs argue Georgia’s “exact match” voter registration rules are inconsistent. The group said the system can invalidate voters for hyphenated names, nicknames, and other information that doesn’t match government records.

It said that disproportionately affects Black voters.

The state has already defeated several of the group’s claims in lower courts.
