David Edenfield along with his wife and son were arrested in the case.
Edenfield was charged with murder, molestation and other crimes. His wife, Peggy Edenfield, pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He was convicted and sentenced to death.
Edenfield appealed his sentence and conviction, saying he had ineffective counsel. In 2022, a court threw out his death sentence over how his attorneys presented evidence over a claim of intellectual disability during his sentencing.
The Supreme Court has since reversed that decision to reinstate the death sentence.
The court did send the case back to the lower court to reconsider Edenfield’s claims about his legal representation.
Their son, George, was found not competent to stand trial and has been in a state mental hospital.
