Cook was taken into custody Friday at his home, and during an interview with investigators, he admitted to the shooting, police said.

In addition to the four aggravated assault charges, Cook was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to police, a father and mother and their two small children were shot at just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday while traveling north on U.S. 17.

The man told police that two vehicles pulled out in front of his vehicle, causing him to slam on his brakes. He said one of the vehicles sped away while a silver sedan pulled up beside the man’s vehicle.

Shortly after that, shots were fired. The man was struck by the gunfire, but the bullet did not penetrate his body, police said. His wife in the front passenger seat was hit in the neck and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The man refused treatment, and the children were not hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.
