BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Port of Brunswick is getting busier.
The port just set another record for cargo traffic in May, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.
A part of this boom is because of ships that went there from Baltimore after the bridge collapsed a few months ago. Things really picked up for the Port of Brunswick even though it was already busy before that.
In May, more than 86,500 units of cargo in what’s called “Roll on-Roll off” moved through the port.
Here’s a breakdown of the numbers for perspective.
- That’s more than 18,000 units compared to May 2023
- 57 different ships passed through the port in May
- That’s 12 more than the year before
Georgia Ports Authority’s CEO said a part of the growth was because of a bigger space at Colonel‘s Island Terminal and, cargo that was supposed to go through Savannah was rerouted through Brunswick, in addition to extra ships sent to Georgia after the deadly bridge collapse in March.
The notable rise in activity is a welcome change for local businesses and workers.
Brunswick is the second busiest US port for cars and trucks along with heavy machinery, only behind Baltimore.
Georgia Ports Authority moved more than 796,000 automobiles and heavy machines last month.
As far as Baltimore, the port there is open again, but not quite back to its typical activity yet.
Officials there say they expect to return to normal levels next month.
