New report finds 167 properties damaged by Hurricane Helene in Glynn County; 900 still without power

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – A new report released Wednesday by Glynn County officials found that more than 160 public and private properties were damaged as Hurricane Helene swept through the area.

According to the report, 115 private properties were damaged (4 destroyed, 9 inaccessible, 24 major, 52 minor, 26 affected) and 52 public properties were damaged (2 major, 45 minor, 5 affected).

Georgia Power said less than 900 customers were without power Wednesday morning in the Brunswick/Glynn County area and all traffic signals are now operational.

Debris removal for unincorporated Glynn County will begin Monday, Oct. 7. For the City of Brunswick the same date is tentatively scheduled to begin debris removal. Only storm-related debris will be collected.

County residents are advised to gather organic-only debris and place it roadside for pickup. Public Works will make two passes through the county once collection begins. The county estimates 40,000 cubic yards of debris are to be cleared.

Glynn County Public Works crews have started addressing debris (collecting and stacking) on County and GDOT right of way and County facilities. This is expected to take two weeks to complete. Debris removal from drainage outfall canals will start the week of Oct. 7. County street sign restoration will begin Thursday.

The city expects debris removal to be a three to four-week process with two passes through the city. Pickup will include organic debris (i.e. tree limbs, leaves, etc) and storm related construction & demolition (C&D). Items cannot be co-mingled.

It is important that only storm-related debris is eligible for removal. The debris should not be bagged and it should not be mixed with other garbage or yard waste. Residents are asked to separate debris into piles, no bags, only organic materials, do not block right of ways, put at curb.

Glynn County Recreation & Parks: Activities resume Wednesday night on the mainland and SSI. Blythe Island Regional Park campground and marina are open. Selden Park still does not have power, so the gymnasium is closed. Staff is continuing to clean up tree debris in county parks.

City of Brunswick Recreation activities are expected to resume Wednesday.

DNR’s CoastFest is canceled for Saturday and will be rescheduled.

Cooling and Charging stations: City of Brunswick cooling and recharging station at Howard Coffin Park, 1402 Sonny Miller Way will be open until noon Wednesday.
