GEORGIA – Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Helene hit Southeast Georgia, the community is bracing to endure the impact of another storm.
The Southeast Georgia community is still recovering from the devastating effects of Helene, which touched down a little over a week ago.

Glynn County
Glynn County expects to start feeling some of Hurricane Milton’s impacts on Thursday morning.
A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for Southeast Georgia counties such as Charlton, Brantley, Wayne, Glynn and Camden.
Portions of Coastal Georgia are also under a Flood Watch and a Storm Surge Watch.
Expected Local Impacts to Glynn County:
Wind: Glynn County could experience strong tropical storm-force winds (39-57mph) and hurricane-force gusts (60-74 mph) along the coast. Prepare for the earliest arrival of tropical storm-force winds expected between midnight and 4 a.m. Thursday (this is earlier than previous forecasts).
Rainfall & Flooding: Heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding, especially in flood-prone rivers.
Storm Surge: Coastal areas should brace for potential storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground level (AGL), especially in areas prone to flooding (e.g., those affected by hurricanes Matthew, Irma, and Nicole).
Marine Conditions: Dangerous conditions will affect coastal waters starting late Wednesday through the weekend.

Community Notes
- Glynn County and City of Brunswick offices will be closed on Thursday
- Glynn County courts will be closed on Thursday
- Glynn County Recreation & Parks: all activities cancelled Thursday
- Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water Sewer Commission: offices will be closed on Thursday
- Convention & Visitors Bureau: Welcome Centers will be closed on Thursday
- College of Coastal Georgia: On-line classes only on Thursday; regular schedule to resume Friday.
- Glynn County Schools: Will remain open on Wednesday, Oct. 9. However, all extracurricular activities and after-school programs will conclude by 7 p.m. that day.
Marshes of Glynn Libraries: All programming starting Wednesday are cancelled. This will include all story times, SSI yoga, SSI legos, Strummers practice, BWK tai chi, BWK sip and stitch, ESL, BWK scrabble, the silent book club, and genealogy. All programming will resume Mon. 10/14/24.
Jekyll Island Authority reports hotels are around 90% occupancy all nights through Sunday. Many hotels report many of their initial cancellations have already filled with bookings from Florida evacuees.

Free sand and sandbags are available at four locations in Brunswick and Glynn County.

Camden County
Office closures:
- Municipal and County offices will be closed from Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 8:00 AM through Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 5:00 PM. Government offices will resume normal hours and operations on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 8:00 AM, weather and conditions permitting.
Board of Education
- Will move to Distance Learning starting Wednesday, October 9, 2024, through Friday, October 11, 2024. In-School Learning will resume on Monday, October 14, 2024, weather and conditions permitting.
Waste Collection
- MSW and C&D Landfills: Both landfills will remain open on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, with normal operating hours but will be closed on Thursday, October 10, 2024. They will tentatively reopen on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with extended operating hours, weather and conditions permitting.
- County (Unincorporated Area): The Curbside Collections office will be closed on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, and Thursday, October 10, 2024, and will reopen on Friday, October 11, 2024. Note: Thursday collections will be made on Friday, October 11, 2024, and Friday collections will be made on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
- City of Kingsland: Waste collection will occur as normal on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Collections will pause on Thursday, October 10, 2024, and will resume normal operations on Friday, October 11, 2024. Note: Thursday sanitation collection route will occur on Friday, October 11, 2024, and Friday collections will be made on Saturday, October 12, 2024, weather permitting.
- St. Marys/Woodbine: Waste collection will occur as normal on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Collections will pause on Thursday, October 10, 2024, and will resume normal operations on Friday, October 11, 2024. Shelters
A shelter of last resort will be available for residents who live in flood-prone areas, regions vulnerable to high wind, and those who are considered vulnerable due to medical conditions, self-care needs, or age.
- PSA Building, 1050 Wildcat Drive, Kingsland, will open at 5 p.m. Oct. 8.
- Cots, meals, and basic medical supplies will be provided.
- People should bring medicine, personal ID, basic supplies for children and pets, blankets, and essential personal items.
- Pet spacing will be limited and prioritized based on room for people.
Sandbags
Sand is available at four self-service sites in Camden County.
- Kingsland: 132 Royal Parkway, Kingsland
- St. Marys: 819 Point Peter Road, St. Marys
- Woodbine: 1144 Godley Avenue and 1714 Bedell Avenue
Hurricane Helene Recovery and Debris Removal Updates:
DRC and Debris Tech Hauling Service teams are continuing their diligent debris removal efforts until weather conditions from Hurricane Milton become unsafe. Vegetative yard debris removal operations will resume once Milton passes. Please note that comingled waste, which is anything not considered vegetative yard debris, will not be collected. Residents may haul debris to the C&D Landfill at no cost; however, they must follow the required protocol of weighing in and out.
