KINGSLAND, Ga. – Residents at the Grove Park Apartments in Kingsland, Georgia are working to recover a week after a sewage backup flooded their homes, leaving them with damaged property and an overwhelming cleanup.
The incident began when water pumps failed, causing toilets to overflow.
One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, described waking up to a nightmare.
“I went to my son’s room first, and he was still asleep, and the whole floor was flooded with water,” she said. “It started sliding under the walls and into my daughter’s room.”
The situation worsened as water from the sewer system began seeping through other parts of the apartment.
“I went out front, and where they keep the water heater, water was coming out,” she said. “That’s when I started seeing little feces... from the sewer.”
Faced with the unsanitary conditions, the resident quickly gathered her children and left the apartment.
“I don’t even want to stay in this unit anymore,” she said. “This has been like the overflow of other people’s stuff, disgusted me. My mind was everywhere. I was mainly thinking about my kids.”
The landlord issued a statement, saying, “The backups were contained to individual resident units and those residents were provided a hotel room so professionals could properly clean up the spillage in their units. Any minor seepage into the breezeway of the building was also cleaned and treated by professionals. We want to ensure you this matter was immediately handled properly and has been resolved.”
Despite the reassurances, residents hoped no one else has to experience these issues.
