US Mint to release quarter recognizing Cumberland Island

ST. MARYS, Ga. – Cumberland Island National Seashore will be part of the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful quarters program next year.

“This coin recognizes Cumberland Island as the treasure it is, and commemorates the efforts of those who worked to preserve it for future generations," Superintendent Gary Ingram said in a statement Tuesday.

The quarter, to be released on August 27, 2018, and will be the 44th released overall in the multiyear initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories.  The coins are being issued in the order the featured site was first established as a unit of the national park system.

The design representing Cumberland Island National Seashore depicts a snowy egret perched on a branch on the edge of a salt marsh, ready for flight. This reverse was designed by AIP designer Donna Weaver and sculpted by mint sculptor-engraver Don Everhart.

In accordance with the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, the mint is issuing the new quarters at the rate of five per year. The final coin will be released in 2021.
