17-month-old mauled to death by Rottweiler

Police say child wandered into neighbor's yard where dog was chained

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 17-month-old boy was mauled to death by a neighbor's dog Friday after wandering into a Northside yard.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Destiny Kieszler and her toddler son, Dylan Andres, had just returned from the store to their home in the 1000 block of Maynard Street. Police said the mother was unloading groceries when Dylan walked next door, where the Rottweiler was chained.

A neighbor ran to help and drove Dylan to the hospital, but his life could not be saved.

"We heard screams, running out of the house, and the dog had the baby in its mouth," neighbor Jessica Golden said. "I seen the father just getting on the dog, trying to get the baby loose.  It was just a tragedy."

Homicide detectives were investigating and Jacksonville Animal Care and Control came and removed the dog, which was euthanized shortly after.

This is the second case involving a Rottweiler on Maynard Street in less than a month. According to an incident report from Feb. 10, a police officer responded to a call of a loose dog.

The Rottweiler charged the officer, who shot it, but not fatally. It was apparently not the same dog that killed the boy Friday.
