2 killed in crash on Main Street Bridge, police say

Crash shut down bridge for hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two people were killed in a crash Sunday afternoon on the Main Street Bridge, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash, which happened around 1 p.m., closed both directions of the downtown bridge for more than 3 ½ hours. Police announced at 4:40 p.m. that the bridge had reopened.

According to police, a 34-year-old woman was driving north over the bridge when her vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a Cadillac SUV driven by a 77-year-old man.

Police said the woman died at the scene and the man was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, there were no passengers in either vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office said there were witnesses on scene who talked with police. Traffic homicide detectives are investigating.
