Group calls for justice after teen girl shot in red-light ambush escapes with minor injury

4 others in car at time of shooting were not injured

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is still searching for a shooter that unloaded 20 bullets into a car that was stopped at a traffic light on the Northside early Sunday morning.

The shooting injured a 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in a car with four others. All of the passengers were under 21 years old. According to a JSO report, the girl was shot in the thumb but miraculously no one else in the car was hurt.

The JSO report noted there were bullet holes all over the 2010 Dodge Challenger they were riding in.

Now community groups and residents in the area around Dunn Avenue and Duval Road are looking for justice.

AJ Jordan is with the anti-crime group Mad Dads. He’s imploring anyone with information to come forward saying this shooter needs to be off the streets.

“I would expect somebody knows something and the community has to be held responsible,” he said. “We know that they know where this person’s at. Because he went somewhere and slept last night. So we ask that person, or persons, who knows where this person is at to turn him in or her in.”

Police have released very few details in this case. News4Jax spoke with one law enforcement expert who said investigators very likely have an idea of who pulled the trigger.

News4Jax spoke with former JSO Detective James Brown by phone. He said police probably know more than they’re releasing.

“No one does that at random so there’s probably more motive behind it that they’re not willing to release. Could be anything but it’s definitely targeted,” Brown said.

JSO said as of right now there is no other information available, including a description of the suspect or the suspect’s vehicle.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact JSO by phone at 904-630-0500, email at jsocrimetips@jaxsheriff.org or CrimeStoppers at 866-845-tips.
