JSO searching for driver involved in road rage shooting on Hart Expressway

Man shot in a hit-and-run crash, police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is searching for the driver responsible for a road rage shooting that resulted in a hit-and-run crash on the Hart Expressway early Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office said police responded at about 1:46 a.m. to a call from a man involved in a crash on the off-ramp to Emerson Street from the Hart Expressway.

According to the incident report, after police left the scene of the crash, the suspect returned to the scene, got out of a red Toyota Corolla, and fired into the 22-year-old man’s pickup truck, hitting him in the leg. It states a woman in the pickup ducked to avoid gunfire and that the man in the truck fired through the windshield as the suspect fled.

“Because the suspect came back right after police left, it makes me think he never left the scene and was watching the investigation go on,” said News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson.

JSO said they are not sure if the suspect or his vehicle was hit by the victim’s gunfire.

On Monday night, a black Chevy Silverado that matches the description of the truck in the JSO report was spotted at the scene. Bullet holes could be seen in the windshield.

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Jefferson says it’s difficult for people to be located and charged in road rage cases.

“We’ve got a description of the car. There may be damage to it too, but these kinds of cases are difficult because once you find the car you have to decide who the driver was,” he said.

JSO said if anyone with any information is asked to call its non-emergency number, 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
