According to troopers, two sedans were traveling north on U.S. Highway 1 in the outside travel lane and a pickup truck was traveling south on U.S. Highway in the outside lane. Troopers said the driver of one of the sedans slowed down to make a right-hand turn and the driver of the sedan traveling behind the first sedan failed to slow and attempted to swerve to avoid the first sedan. Troopers said the front of the second sedan then collided with the back of the first sedan, continued north through the median, traveled into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with the pickup.
The driver of the second sedan, a 76-year-old Jacksonville man, died, troopers said. An FHP news release shows he was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the first sedan, a 49-year-old Jacksonville man, and the driver of the pickup, a 70-year-old Hilliard man, suffered minor injuries. The FHP release shows it’s unknown whether the driver of the first sedan was wearing a seat belt.
