JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A large tree fell down on Thursday, blocking Park Street at Boone Park in Avondale.
It happened as showers made their way through Northeast Florida. The road was shut down during the evening as the tree blocked traffic.
Using chainsaws and in a cherry picker, crews worked to cut down the massive tree.
“It rained all day out here, a lot, and I was sitting in here watching golf and I heard this whooshing, crackling wood,” said Steve Thomas, who lives on Park Street.
Thomas said a car with a young woman inside was trapped under the tree.
“My neighbor and I were out there when it happened. She was fine. She cracked her windshield, but that was it,” Thomas said.
The weather also led to minor flooding in flood prone areas—like McCoy’s Creek, near where Christopher Johnson lives. He said he’s used to it with heavy rains.
“It’s gonna be fun driving through the area, and if I have to go near the creek, plan a different route,” Johnson said.
The Weather Authority says Friday morning will start out with clouds and temps low 50s before the returning sunshine warms us back into the mid 70s. Friday will be breezy with the west winds at 15-20 mph helping to dry away Thursday’s puddles.
