Local woman raising money for Ukraine to help refugees escape to Poland

A local woman is raising money to support Ukrainians running away from the war.

Mia Khomitskyi has good friend in Poland right now trying to do as much as he can to help Ukrainians escape from the war.

Khomitskyi set up a GoFundMe to for them to buy supplies.

Translating this video, a man says, “there are 19 kids on this bus being evacuated. We are taking them to Poland to safety. But I don’t know what their future holds.”

It’s a massive risk that Oleg Shmaruk and his team of volunteers are taking. They are saving Ukrainian children from a country at war and taking them to Poland

Shmaruk has been getting help from Khomitskyi after she set up a GoFundMe.

“It was a few days after the war started is when my husband and I and my family and close friends were helping him with whatever we could, but like I said, it was bigger than us,” said Khomitskyi.

Another video shows a charter bus packed with food and clothes. They said grocery store shelves are running low, and not being restocked.

Shmaruk said his main goal is to help as many as he can. He describes the people he’s helping as devastated and shocked, and they just didn’t believe they’d be in a war.

“He’s like I really didn’t understand what war was until I had to live through it. He’s like to people that have lost everything they don’t have a house or food to eat, anything, a dollar, would be of great value to them,” said Shmaruk.

Shmaruk and his crew said donations from America give them hope. And even though they are in dark times, he said it feels good to know they aren’t alone.

Shmaruk says when Ukrainians get to Poland they are welcomed with open arms.

He knows what he’s doing is dangerous, and they aren’t part of any organization. He’s doing this at his own will.
