JACKSONVILLE, Fla – A new report shows more people are being hit and killed on the road across the country.

Florida’s numbers had a big jump last year where 444 people were hit and killed on Florida roads in the first half of last year. That’s a 31% jump from the same time in 2020. It’s also the largest increase in the U.S.

Pittsburg Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was hit and killed by a dump truck Saturday morning while trying to cross a highway in Broward County.

FHP still does not know why Haskins, who was a few weeks shy of his 25th birthday, was trying to cross the highway.

The surge of deadly crashes involving pedestrians isn’t limited to Florida.

According to a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association that was released last week, there was a 17% jump in people hit and killed within the first six months of last year compared to the same time frame in 2020.

Florida, Texas and California made up for 37% of all pedestrian deaths in the first half of last year, even though they only account for 27% of the population.

The Department of Transportation made a safety plan earlier this year in an attempt to cut down on these situations.

A part of its plans is using more speed cameras on roads and a push for the inclusion of automatic emergency braking systems in all new cars
