Uncertainty ahead for residents forced out of Southside motel

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – More people staying at the Americas Best Inn started moving out on Sunday.

The managers for the hotel off Baymeadowes Road gave them a notice Thursday saying they had to be out by Friday due to renovations.

The former manager said everyone seems ok as they move out and look for a new place to stay.

She said there is no one for them to pay rent to and until an eviction notice is done the right way, technically they don’t have to leave.

The former manager said people living there have pitched in to help with some of the maintenance problems.

On Friday, she said all 80 rooms were filled.

News4JAX was told the Jewish Family and Community Services will put five families in motels starting on Monday.

The former manager said outside of that five, she knows maybe three other families who’ve already left.

News4JAX has been at the hotel almost every day this week, talking about Building 1 being condemned, the child injured in the shooting and the notice from management.

On Sunday morning News4JAX got a tip about a man found dead in his motel room. It’s unclear what happened but News4JAX spoke to one man who knows the person who died.

“He’s been here a long time maybe 8-9 months. I’ve been here three years. Not for much longer though,” said one resident.

News4JAX had a conversation with a man who said he used to own the motel, but said he doesn’t own it anymore, through city records, and managers at the motel say he does.
