JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Two people were injured in a shooting Sunday evening outside a popular bar in Jacksonville Beach, police said.
One of those two -- identified as 23-year-old Breon Geddes -- was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to an arrest report released by the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
Officers said they responded around 10:20 p.m. to shots fired in the parking lot north of Brix Taphouse on Second Street North at Second Avenue North.
When the double shooting happened, the crowd from the Opening of the Beaches Parade had thinned out, officials said.
Police said one person, identified as Geddes, was found near Biggie’s Pizza on Third Street North with a gunshot wound to his leg. According to the arrest report, police reported that they found a Glock with an extended magazine in one of his pant legs.
Cellphone video shows police handcuffing him on the sidewalk. Police said Geddes was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and later arrested on the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted Florida felon.
Another person was found in the area of Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard on Third Street North with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The Police Department said it will not be releasing the second person’s name at this time.
In addition to the firearm found in possession of Geddes, according to police, another firearm was found at the scene. Police did not say exactly where that second gun was located.
A witness told News4JAX that they saw a man chasing another man on Sunday evening. The witness said they thought the men were just messing around until the pursuer pulled out a gun and fired at least seven shots.
On Monday morning, at least half a dozen evidence markers could be seen in front of the bike rack in the Brix Taphouse parking lot. Part of Second Street North was also blocked with caution tape.
As the Police Department continues to investigate, and police told News4JAX that they’re still trying to sort out who shot who Sunday evening,
Geddes appeared in court Monday afternoon, and the judge ordered him held in the Duval County jail on a $150,000 bond -- three times higher than the state requested. His attorney said Geddes is a lifelong Jacksonville resident who works building ships in the Clay County area.
According to the report from the Police Department, Geddes is a gang member. According to police, it’s not clear if the incident Sunday night was gang-related.
Duval County court records show Geddes has convictions for Geddes eluding police and carrying a concealed weapon.
Jacksonville Beach residents on Monday reacted to the shooting.
Jacksonville Beach resident Pat Hisman told News4JAX that the area where it happened is a place she visits every week.
“We go to Brix every Wednesday for a $5 burger, and it’s great. I mean, it’s a clean bar, everything,” Hisman said. “I mean, I’m just shocked that this has happened.”
Jacksonville Beach resident Tucker Irwin is wary of crime in Jacksonville.
“It makes me feel a little unsafe around Jacksonville, you know,” Irwin said. “I mean, you hear about another shooting every night, I mean.”
Irwin said he’s tired of hearing about gun violence.
“Makes it difficult to live around here,” he said. “You think you might want to move.”
