JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, the Florida Sheriffs Association honored 30 officers who died in the line of duty, including several from the Jacksonville area, by adding their names to the Memorial Wall at the organization’s headquarters in Tallahassee.
Jacksonville-area officers who were memorialized include Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joshua Moyers, who was shot during a traffic stop in September and died.
The driver Moyers stopped, later identified by deputies as Patrick McDowell, took off and disappeared for five days, with hundreds of law enforcement members combing through wooded areas of Nassau County looking for him.
The intense manhunt culminated at the Kirsten Higginbotham Sports Complex in Nassau County. After a chase, McDowell was corned in a bathroom where he surrendered and was eventually indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder.
“Thank you again, on behalf of all the sheriff’s of the state, and the Florida Sheriff’s Association, for sharing your loved ones with us and them giving their all. Thank you,” said Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum, FSA president.
Other area officers whose names went on the wall include St. Johns County Deputy Jody Hull Jr., Jacksonville auxiliary Sgt. Louis Livatino, Nassau County Deputy Jack Gwynes and Clay County Deputy Clint Seagle. All of those officers died of COVID-19.
