JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police used a PIT maneuver Wednesday evening to stop an SUV that had been reported stolen during an armed carjacking earlier in the day, which occurred in Northwest Jacksonville, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Lt. Rickie Valentine, with the Sheriff’s Office, said units responded to the reported carjacking around 2 p.m., and that units put out a BOLO for the vehicle. He said a detective observed the vehicle, confirming it was the same make and model, and had the correct license plate.
“As he got behind that vehicle, the occupants decided to start accelerating from him. He tried to initiate a traffic stop, turned his lights and sirens on. The vehicle turned off from University Boulevard northbound on Philips Highway,” Valentine said.
The lieutenant said in order to prevent a pursuit, a detective performed a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver, and that the SUV subsequently overturned. A firearm was recovered by investigators at the scene.
Valentine said both occupants of the SUV were detained and that the driver sustained minor injuries.
