I-TEAM: Frightening video shows Duval County bus wheel fall off with students on board

Same accident happened two times in same week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The wheels on the bus are supposed to go round and round — while still attached to the bus. But during two instances this week... that was not the case.

Parents have safety concerns after a frightening video captured the moment a wheel fell off of a moving school bus in Jacksonville on Wednesday.

The wheel can be spotted rolling next to the moving bus as students watched and yelled in horror. News4JAX learned the bus was filled with high school and middle school students during the time of the incident.

It’s the second time this week that this has happened, with the same route and the same driver, even though the buses were swapped out.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, but parents told News4JAX it raises some red flags.

Gladys Wheelings, whose daughter, a freshman at Paxon School for Advanced Studies, was on the bus when the wheel fell off, said her daughter is now scared to ride the bus.

“She was frightened,” Wheelings said. “She was panicking. She asked me does she have to take the bus? Can I take her? But I’m a working single parent so I’m sorry to say you will have to take the bus home.”

News4JAX asked Wheelings if she got any answers for why this happened.

“None,” Wheelings said. “Haven’t got a phone call whatsoever.”

News4JAX received responses from both Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and Student Transportation of America (STA).

The company said they’re adjusting processes at terminals and emphasizing the required maintenance checks before a bus picks up students each day.
