JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A recently elected local state representative is now thinking about stepping down from that post to run for a seat on Jacksonville’s city council.

Democrat Rep. Angie Nixon told News4JAX she still has not made a decision but is leaning in that direction.

“I think you’re getting a lot more leverage here in city council, you know, it’s really, really, really partisan in Tallahassee. You know, it’s very evident that we are, my party is in the super minority. But I believe here, on a local level, it’s not as partisan. And so as a city council member, you have more leverage, and you have more opportunity to be in the faces, and in the streets with the community year-round,” Nixon said.

Nixon will have to make a decision soon. Qualifying for the spring election is in January.

If she runs, she believes it will be in District 10 on Jacksonville’s Northside and she could face incumbent council member and Democrat Brenda Priestly Jackson.

“District 10 needs a lot more investment than what it has been getting,” Nixon said. “There are things like workforce housing that’s needed. There are things like more entertainment, more quality food options, more economic — real, deeply rooted economic investment — so the area can have better infrastructure, which are some of the things that I’ve been working toward and advocating for my entire career as a community organizer,” Nixon said.
