JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Monday the arrest of a man accused of murdering Prince Holland, who was shot during a drive-by in December.
It is the second arrest in the case.
Kentrevious Garard, 25, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder, four counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of shooting or throwing deadly missiles, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters.
“Garard was the trigger puller in this case,” Waters said.
Holland, 13, was on the way home from football along with three other boys and coach Jaylen Burroughs, the 21-year-old driver who was shot 10 times when another car pulled up and started shooting at the SUV they were traveling in.
Waters said that the vehicle was targeted by a group and that the shooting did not have anything to do with the football league.
In early January, the Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Marcel Johnson, 22, who Waters said was the driver of the car. He was charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and shooting or throwing deadly missiles.
“The car was targeted. It was callous. They didn’t care who they shot in the car, didn’t matter,” Waters said.
A.J. Jordan, outreach coordinator with MAD DADS, said the arrest helps the community feel a bit safer.
“I think we are making good strides in the community,” Jordan said. “Our sheriff so far has been very visible, very talkative, and I think when the community knows that everybody cares, especially our leadership such as T.K. Waters, our sheriff, and he’s out on the forefront of things, it makes a difference along with community speaking up — MAD DADS, other organizations being out in the community. When we all work together, our city is safer together.”
Haraka Carswell, with Silent Women Speaking, has been working with the Holland family. She says this has been a long process for the family.
“I’m sure it will be some type of closure (for the family). Of course, it would never bring Prince back, but I know for justice to be served for, you know, for Prince is some type of closure,” Carswell said.
Assistant State Attorney L.E. Hutton said investigators know who the intended target was but did not reveal who that was.
“This agency has lived up to my pledge to bring those criminally responsible for this tragedy to justice. Although our hearts will always be heavy with grief. Today, we are a community galvanized with hope that the prospect of accountability provides,” he said at the Monday news briefing.
Hutton also said fits the set of circumstances that typically is presented to a grand jury for a first-degree murder indictment.
Waters left this announcement to those who he said “continue to commit acts of violence and terrorize” the community:
“Jacksonville will not tolerate violence. Jacksonville will not excuse violence. We know who you are, and we’re coming for you,” Waters said. “Let this arrest and the arrest of Marcell Johnson be your clear warning.”
Holland’s case is still an ongoing investigation.
Garard was arrested by the U.S. Marshals in Orange County.
According to an arrest report obtained by News4JAX, in June 2022, Garard was arrested on armed drug trafficking charges, which were filed after a drug raid at a Northside home. Those charges, however, were later dropped.
