JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The family of a teen killed on the Southside nearly a week ago celebrated his birthday on Tuesday.
Makye Vogel was killed outside an apartment complex on Old Baymeadows Road.
So far no arrest has been made.
The family held a candlelight vigil for his 17th birthday.
During the vigil, his mom broke down in tears saying it was the first time she had the chance to process everything since losing her son.
The family of Makye Vogel was surrounded by his close friends as they celebrated his life.
Makye was shot and killed outside an apartment complex after attending a birthday party.
His mother Heather Moorer said it’s been hard since losing her son.
“It’s an overload. I can’t even tell you how I’m feeling, like I feel so numb and so overwhelmed. And depressed. Depression is terrible today. Like I keep breaking down crying like nonstop,” Moorer said.
She said she never thought she would have to do something like this for any of her children but said she’s grateful for the community’s support.
“On Easter, none of his friends forgot his little brother. I had a whole bunch of these kids at my house decorating easter eggs,” Moorer said.
Moorer said she plans to stay in the community and stay loud to keep his memory alive and find justice.
“I’m not gonna let him to be forgotten. He will not be forgotten,” she said.
