JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A brother and sister are recovering after being shot by the woman’s ex-boyfriend early Sunday morning, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened at the Plantation Apartments on Old Kings Road South in the San Jose neighborhood just before 4 a.m.
Evidence markers sat at the doorway to mark the spot of the shooting. Sergeant Karen Dukes with JSO says the ex-boyfriend broke into the apartment through the back entrance and forced his way inside.
Dukes said the man fired one shot and that single bullet hit both siblings, who were both taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“The bullet actually went through the female’s cheek, and then struck her brother behind her in his right arm,” Dukes said.
The shooting happened two doors down from where Rene Rodriguez lives with his two sons.
“I am not used to this. I guess nobody is,” Rodriguez said, who has lived in his current unit for nearly six months. “I got worried because I have two sons. One is 24, the other is 28 and they usually come here late.”
JSO says the man ran away from the apartments after the shooting and has not been arrested.
There were three children who were sleeping inside the apartment at the time of the shooting all between the ages of 1 and 12 years old, but were not hurt.
“I am glad nothing happened to them” Rodriguez said. “I am even shaking.”
Detectives hope there is surveillance video at this complex that captured the break-in and shooter running away that can help with their investigation.
