JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man crashed and flipped his car into the oncoming lanes after being fatally shot early Monday morning on Southside Boulevard at Deerwood Park Boulevard, police said.
All lanes in both directions from Deerwood Park Boulevard to JTB were shut down for hours as police investigated.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mark Lessard said police were called to the area just after 1 a.m. because of reports of both a shooting and a crash.
Officers found the driver shot inside the vehicle, which was on its roof on the northbound side of Southside Boulevard.
Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he later died. Police believe he was in his late 20s.
Lessard said they are still working to identify the man and any potential witnesses. He said investigators do not have suspect information but a couple of people at the scene have been detained.
It’s still early in the investigation, but Lessard said it appears the car was headed southbound when the man was shot. The car then hit the median, flipped and ended up on its roof on the northbound side of the road.
Lessard said it’s not clear if there were other people in the car or if the man was shot by someone outside the car.
“We do realize that this is a busy roadway and detectives are on scene working as quickly as possible in order to clear this roadway,” Lessard said, encouraging drivers who typically use that route to go another way Monday morning if possible.
The northbound lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m. but traffic was still moving slowly during rush hour.
