JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lakesha Burton, Jacksonville’s Director of Community Initiatives, has stepped down from her role. The city said she is leaving her post to focus on the health of her husband.
“I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve in your administration. I genuinely felt that I had a great opportunity to move your vision for a thriving community forward. However, the unexpected health challenges my husband is facing require me to step back from my role as a full-time employee. I am open to considering other ways to continue serving you and our city,” Burton wrote.
Burton served with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years and recently ran for sheriff before taking on the role of Director of Community Initatives under Mayor Donna Deegan in July 2023 to lead prevention and intervention programs that build safer communities.
Burton also previously served as News4JAX’s Crime and Safety Analyst.
Burton is married to Duval County Schools Police Chief Greg Burton, who was recently hospitalized.
Deegan said she’s grateful for Burton’s service to the city and is praying for the Burton family.
“The Burtons are in our hearts and our prayers as Greg faces unexpected health challenges,” Deegan said. “I am incredibly grateful for Lakesha’s service to Jacksonville both in the Mayor’s Office and over 24 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She is a passionate and dedicated public servant who cares deeply about our community. I look forward to working with her in the future.”
