Sound Off: SmileDirectClub suddenly shut down. Were you left hanging by the orthodontics company?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – SmileDirect Club, a direct-to-consumer dentistry and orthodontistry company, suddenly shut down last week after less than 10 years in business, according to CNN.

The company that sells teeth aligners filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy less than three months ago.

The company issued a statement on its website following the closure and said that “aligner treatment is no longer available through the SmileDirectClub platform,” and encouraged people who were in the middle of treatment to consult their local doctor or dentist. The company also said its lifetime guarantee is no longer in place and customers are expected to continue to make all monthly payments.

Because a typical SmileDirectClub teeth-straightening course takes 4-6 months, some existing customers may be stranded in the middle of treatment.

According to CNN, SmileDirectClub had once heralded itself as an affordable alternative to traditional orthodontics with a mission “to democratize access to a smile each and every person loves by making it affordable and convenient for everyone.” Its aligners cost around $2,000, while clear aligners purchased through more traditional routes at brick-and-mortar medical offices can cost around $5,000.
