JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mayor Deegan declared Dec. 13, 2023 to be Fallen Firefighter Memorial Day at the JFRD memorial ceremony to honor the 25 firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony took place in downtown Jacksonville at JFRD Fire Station 1 on N Liberty Street.

“We recognize the sacrifices that you’ve made and we cannot tell you thank you often enough,” Deegan said.

She also implored the citizens to honor the 25 fire and rescue personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to support the surviving family members.

Fire Chief Keith Powers echoed Deegan’s sentiment about supporting the families of the fallen firefighters.

“You know today’s extremely difficult for those survivors and I want each and every one of them to know that the current and retired members of JFRD are here and we stand with you,” Powers said.

The JFRD fallen firefighter memorial ceremony will be held annually.
