13-foot great white shark makes waters off Jacksonville’s coast his home for the holidays

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida attracts a lot of visitors each winter, and not all are human.

Ocearch is tracking several sharks off the coast of Northeast Florida.

Right now, a 1,400-pound great white shark is swimming about 50 miles off the coast. It’s a 13-foot-long adult male named Breton.

He was first tagged back in 2020 off the coast of Nova Scotia and has traveled more than 33,000 miles since. He’s made several trips up and down the East Coast.

There is another great white named Penny just south of Miami.

Scientists said sharks are like snowbirds and head south as temperatures drop.

They can stay anywhere from one to 100 miles offshore.

In 2013, a 3,500-pound, 16-foot great white shark named Mary Lee was tracked just 200 yards off the shore from Jacksonville Beach.
