School Closures: Counties canceling classes Tuesday due to severe weather

Duval, Clay & Nassau among the counties closing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Due to the threat of severe weather, several Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia counties are canceling classes on Tuesday.

Georgia

All 12 Ware County schools will be closed to staff and students on Tuesday, the school district announced on Monday.

School districts in Glynn, Brantley and Camden counties also announced campuses will be closed due to the threat of severe weather, high winds, power outages, tornadoes and possible road and bridge closures.

“The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. We will keep you abreast of any new information as it becomes available. Please continue to monitor your email, GCS social media, and GCS website for alerts and updates,” Glynn County Schools wrote in a 2 p.m. announcement.

Storms will begin to move in late Monday, primarily for Georgia, and the storm risk for Monday night is non-severe.

Duval County

Duval County Public Schools said it was monitoring weather reports and decided to cancel classes for Tuesday.

The University of North Florida and Jacksonville University also announced that classes would be canceled, including online classes for UNF.

Private school closures include:

  • The Bolles School
  • Jacksonville Country Day (Extended Care and all Enrichment activities are canceled as well.)
  • Joshua Christian Academy

Clay County

The Clay County School District announced Monday that it will join a host of other counties canceling classes on Tuesday. Normal operations will take place on Wednesday.

St. Johns Country Day School will also close with expectations to reopen on Wednesday.

St. Johns River State College in Orange Park will close all campuses and cancel in-person classes at 12 p.m. on Tuesday. Events scheduled on campus are canceled and The Thrasher-Horne Center will also be closed.

St. Johns County

The St. Johns County School District announced plans to have all St. John County schools dismissed from classes one hour early on Tuesday. All after-school activities will be canceled as well. The monthly school board meeting is canceled and moved to Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.

The weekly Wednesday early release will not be affected.

Nassau County

Nassau County School District schools will close and all before and after-school activities will be canceled.

Flagler County

Flagler County schools will remain open but after-school activities are canceled on Tuesday.

Alachua County

Alachua County Public Schools will close Tuesday and all extracurricular and after-school activities will be canceled as well. Classes will be made-up on Friday, Feb. 16.

Baker County

The Baker County School District said it will close schools and all transportation will be canceled Tuesday.

Bradford County

Bradford County School District announced school closures across the county on Tuesday.

Hope Christian Academy in Starke is also closed Tuesday.

Columbia County

The Columbia County School District changed its plans and is now canceling classes and after-school activities on Tuesday. The school board meeting will also be postponed to Tuesday, Jan. 23. The district is expecting to resume regular operations on Wednesday if the weather permits.

Union County

Union County Schools and Tigers Den will close all schools Tuesday with plans to resume full activities on Wednesday, Jan. 10. All after-school activities are also canceled.

According to the NWS, the isolated strong-to-severe storms will bring the threat of heavy downpours, tornadoes, and small hail from noon to sunset on Tuesday.
