Hit-and-run: 6-year-old killed when SUV forced off Merrill Road into telephone pole

JSO looking for light-colored sedan with damage to the passenger-side doors that caused crash and did not stop

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 6-year-old child was killed late Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in Jacksonville’s Arlington area when the SUV they were riding in was forced off the road by a car that was changing lanes, police said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the silver SUV the child was riding in was heading west on Merrill Road around 11 p.m. when, according to witnesses, a light-colored sedan changed lanes into the SUV, forcing it off the road.

The SUV crashed into a wooden telephone pole, and the 6-year-old died at the scene. The driver of the SUV and another child passenger were taken to a hospital.

The light-colored sedan sped away, and police are searching for the driver. The car will likely have damage to the passenger’s side door(s).

Anyone with information about the light-colored car is encouraged to contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or call Crimestoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. You might be eligible for a cash reward.
