‘I got my mom back’: Woman finally reunited with mother’s ashes after they were lost in the mail for months

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A daughter was finally reunited with her mother’s ashes after they were lost in the mail last year.

News4JAX was there for the emotional moment when she received her mother’s remains.

Marilyn Bing was hoping someone would find her mother’s ashes after the United States Postal Service told her they had been misplaced.

Bing’s prayers were answered this week when her mother’s ashes were delivered to her door.

Last November, Bing’s mother died and was cremated but the ashes were never delivered to her home.

But after her story aired on News4JAX, she got an unexpected call from her brother. Their mother’s ashes had been found in Jacksonville.

According to Bing, she was told that the box ended up at the WestRock recycling facility, a facility used by multiple vendors and the postal service.

“I fell down,” she said. “My brother called and said are you sitting or are you standing?”

Her mother’s ashes were found by an unknown person in Jacksonville at the recycling center and then mailed back to the crematory in Illinois. Bing’s brother reviewed them and they were mailed back to Jacksonville.

Now Bing finally has her mother’s ashes after two post office workers delivered them to her door with a reimbursement check, cards and flowers.

“When he brought this to my door it was like my life, just a bright light came with him, and she was with him. It was just like I could hear music almost, like God was saying ‘See, I told you. I got them. I got this,’” she said.

Bing got goosebumps when she opened the box.

“I just can’t believe it. I got my mom back. I got my mom,” she said.

Bing lost her mother when she passed away and then again when her ashes were lost but this time, she has her mother back forever.

Bing said the post office is still trying to figure out how her mother’s ashes ended up at the recycling facility.

The family said they now plan to make tiny lockets with her ashes inside. They also plan on celebrating her mother’s life again now that her ashes have been found.

Advice: Accidents can happen, but if you get tracking and insurance on your package it at least gives you a higher chance of knowing where your package is located.
