A man was shot trying to buy cellphones from someone he met online. The one safety tip police want you to know

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is recovering after police said he was ambushed and shot while trying to buy cellphones.

The man is expected to survive.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the man was with his brother and went to meet the seller in the Lackawanna neighborhood on Monday.

The men said several armed people walked up to their car and demanded everything on them.

The driver tried to get away when he noticed they had guns and that is when he was shot in the arm and chest.

Police are still searching for the people behind this and looking through surveillance footage that could lead to a possible arrest.

A similar situation last month.

Police Arrested Michael Sanders III after they said he used Facebook Marketplace to set up two separate armed robberies. In both cases, they said he advertised a used iPhone and then robbed the buyers at gunpoint.

When buying or selling something to someone you don’t know, police want to remind you to meet up in a safe place.

That includes any of JSO’s seven manned substations across the city. They’re open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

News4JAX Crime and Safety Analyst Tom Hackney said you should also always inspect the profile of the person you’re dealing with online. If the profile is brand new, it could be a red flag that something is wrong.
