School crossing guard charged with child abuse, fired from JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that a school crossing guard who had been under investigation was fired after being charged with child abuse.

The investigation into Theresa L. Mitchell began last Friday when JSO “was made aware of an incident,” police said.

They did not elaborate on what the incident involved but said the investigation was begun by the Department of Children and Families.

Following the investigation, Mitchell was charged with child abuse without great bodily harm.

She had been employed by JSO as a crossing guard since August 2020 but was fired following the arrest, the agency said.
