2 people killed in head-on crash on State Road 16 in St. Johns County

A 32-year-old man and a 9-year-old girl suffered serious injuries

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Two people died in a head-on crash Saturday morning on State Road 16, east of San Giacomo Road, in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the FHP report, a 20-year-old man from St. Augustine was traveling eastbound on SR 16 when, for some reason, he traveled into the westbound lane and collided head-on with an SUV traveling in that direction.

The 20-year-old driver died at the scene. He was the only occupant of that car, according to the report.

The report indicates the SUV had five occupants.

A 60-year-old woman from Orlando, who was a passenger in the SUV, also died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 32-year-old man from Orlando, suffered serious injuries. A 9-year-old girl also suffered serious injuries, the report states.

A 30-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl suffered minor injuries, according to the report.

A woman who lives in a nearby subdivision said she was sad to hear about the crash but added that the road is not the safest.

“Just take your time, it’s just not worth it. This is only going to get busier. We’ve had quite a few accidents,” Rae Malee Walsh said.

She said she hopes city leaders take a good look at the road to make changes to make it safer.

According to FHP, all lanes of State Road 16 were reopened shortly before 4:00 p.m. after the vehicles involved in the crash were removed.

Officials are still investigating this incident.
