JTA announces proposed changes to help save riders money and help seniors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.Jacksonville Transportation Authority is asking riders to use their MyJTA app on their phones to help save money. JTA workers answered questions Wednesday morning about the potential changes.

“Within the app, we’re looking to simplify the fare using a method called best fare. The technology within the app will allow our customers to not have to think about their purchasing habits or their riding habits. They just continue to use the app and they will get the best fare,” JTA Revenue Manager, Endya Freeman, said.

Freeman says the company wants all riders to use the app in order to take advantage of their deals. Here’s an example of how it would work: buying a one-day pass in person is $4.50, while buying on the app would provide a discount of 25 cents, making the fare $4.25.

Another proposed change involves riders age 65 and older.

“JTA is proposing for seniors to use their Florida drivers license or their Florida ID to ride for free. Right now, seniors are required to use their Star Card. We’re looking to make transit available to all seniors,” Freeman said.

JTA is taking public comments on the proposed changes until March 21, and if approved, they will go into effect May 1.
