Local nonprofit to bring affordable townhouse complex in Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – More affordable housing is coming to the beaches thanks to a local non-profit organization.

Beaches Habitat for Humanity will build townhome units in Atlantic Beach.

Atlantic Beach resident Michelle Tomlinson said more affordable housing is needed.

“We bought our house five years ago, and I would call it affordable then, but now it is not affordable. I’m not sure what rent prices are but I know it is really hard to find places to rent,” Tomlinson said.

The average cost for rent is around $1,600, according to rentcafé.com. It’s a nearly $600-dollar jump since 2021 – less than five years ago.

To improve affordability in the neighborhood, Beaches Habitat Humanity is building an affordable townhouse complex on Mayport Road.

The property will include 44 townhomes across 11 different buildings.

“I think anytime there’s new affordable housing, especially at the beach it’s a good thing,” Tomlinson said.

It’s unknown how much it will cost once this property is built or what financing options look like.

But to be considered, you must submit an application through the Beaches Habitat for Humanity website.
