The presidential primaries are over. Now it’s time to gear up for the upcoming election

Tell Us: How do you feel about heading to the polls later this year?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Republican presidential primary election wrapped at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Ballots were quickly counted after polls closed in Duval County and across the state. Florida is a closed primary state, meaning that only registered voters with a certain party can cast their ballots in the party’s primary.

The election cost in Duval County was close to $1 million.

News4JAX headed to the Ortega precinct -- one of the area’s busiest precincts-- to see voter turnout. Arlington voters also turned out strong.

“It’s your right to vote. You should vote. If you’re going to be in this country, you need to vote. It doesn’t matter if it was only one person on the ballot. I’d be here to vote,” one voter told News4JAX.

There was one precinct where one person was the only voter.

Supervisor Of Elections Jerry Holland said the day went off smoothly. With the primary now over, they are already thinking ahead to the August primary and the general election in November -- where every registered voter can participate.

Holland explained some of the latest changes to election laws.

“Those who vote by mail, that’s the biggest changes in the past two years. They need to renew those [requests] after state federal election,” Holland said. “So, if you haven’t voted by mail since 2022, you probably need to contact us to get your vote by mail ballot for August or November.”

In Jacksonville, some precincts have changed because of lawsuits. So, it’s important that voters double-check precinct locations.
