Man kills father, 12-year-old brother, shoots mother before killing himself in Westside home: JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A young man took his own life after he shot and killed his father and his 12-year-old brother on Easter Sunday in a home on Jacksonville’s Westside, police said.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said JSO learned about what happened when the suspected shooter’s mother, who was shot several times, was found at the entrance of the Duclay neighborhood street where the family lived.

When JSO officers went inside the home on Preston Pines Trail, they discovered the tragic scene.

Coarsey said the suspected shooter, a 22-year-old biracial man, was using racial slurs that his white father did not like and that sparked an argument.

JSO identified the father as 45-year-old Yaniv Grinberg. The 12-year-old boy was identified as Isreal Grinberg.

The 22-year-old then went upstairs, got a gun and put on “some type of tactical vest,” gloves and a mask. He came downstairs around 4:30 p.m. and shot and killed his father, Coarsey said. He then shot and killed his young brother before turning the gun on his mother who was able to escape with her life.

UNCUT: Watch JSO’s full briefing on the deadly shooting:

Two teens, who are also related to the mother and father, were inside the house at the time of the shooting, Coarsey said, but they were able to hide until officers rescued them.

Coarsey said it appeared the suspected shooter took his own life.

Two guns were found inside the house, Coarsey said, including a “long gun” and a handgun. It’s not clear which gun was used.

“The family gave some history of some possible mental health issues,” Coarsey said. “JSO has not had any mental health issue contacts with him but the family said that he has had some.”

The names of the suspected shooter and the victims were not immediately released by JSO.

The mother was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery.
