Duval County Public Schools plans to have new superintendent picked by May 23

Timeline shows the board is in the final stages of selection

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The search for the next superintendent of Duval County Public Schools is underway and applications are being accepted through April 15. There are four candidates on the list right now.

  • Dr. Corwin Robinson
  • Dr. Sito Narcisse
  • Dr. Carlos Perez Jr.
  • Dr. Sylvia Mitchell

Robinson applied for the job in the last round of searches. He’s a program administrator for the St. Tammany Parish School System in Louisiana.

Narcisse stepped down in January from his role as school superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. This was after the school board there voted not to renew his contract.

Perez applied for the job in 2018. He is currently the executive director of the Education Reform Project. He also served as Director of School Quality in New York.

News4JAX is working to gather more information about Mitchell’s background. We have requested the application packets of all four candidates from the school district.

The school board will meet on April 23 to identify semi-finalists and the questions for them. On May 7, the board will meet to select the finalists and review on-site interview schedules, contract negotiation items and process.

Finalists interviews will be held on May 13 and 14 with the board announcing the new superintendent selection on May 23.

This has not been a smooth process. The search was suspended in 2023 after the first attempt to find a replacement for Dr. Diana Greene did not succeed in providing enough qualified candidates.

Greene retired early from the school district at the end of the last school year following a series of investigations including claims of abuse and a toxic work and learning environment at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.

Dr. Dana Kriznar has been serving as interim superintendent. Her contract has been extended through June.
