Mayor emphasizes safety measures at Jacksonville Beach’s festival weeks after triple shooting

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – The first major event at Jacksonville Beach kicked off Friday three weeks after a series of shootings rattled the community. Still, no arrests have been announced.

Springing the Blues returned to the beach for another year of fun with music, shopping and good eats.

It’s a permitted event, which is different from the gathering on the beach that police said led to the three shootings on St. Patrick’s Day.

Jacksonville Beach Mayor Christine Hoffman said permitted events require safety measures.

“Our police department is involved in the planning and in the planning of the security measures for all of our permitted events, which is why it’s so important for events to be permitted so that we have that communication going on throughout the planning process. Here they have, not only do they hire extra police officers to work the event, but they have their own security as well,” Hoffman said.

Many people attended the festival.

“I’m here to enjoy the festivities with my mom. I’m visiting from Atlanta, Georgia, I’m excited just to come listen to some good music,” Joy Brannan, who is visiting from Atlanta said.

Kris Beerline stopped by the festival after work.

“I literally just got off work and then I just walked into like an amazing festival. So not a better way to get off of work and spend your day with the beach music and amazing pop up shops,” Beerline said.

Hoffman even looked forward to the event.

“I love the music. But I will say I love walking around and just enjoying the vibe, seeing people that maybe I only see once a year at this event and just really kind of soaking it all in. This is really the best of the beach,” Hoffman said.

For many in attendance, they know this festival is one they could trust.

“I wish they did have people checking though for anything, you know, that can harm anybody. But overall, I do feel safe,” Brannan said.

The festival ends on April 7. Click here to learn more.
