Study projects amount of traffic expected if Chick-fil-A moves into Oceanway neighborhood

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – News4JAX obtained a 600-page traffic study for the proposed Chick-fil-A in Oceanway.

People who live in the Northcreek subdivision wanted the traffic study before the rezoning was approved.

Many of the neighbors said they are against a high volume business being built in that space. Nearly two months ago, the Land Use and Zoning Committee decided to order the traffic study before deciding on the rezoning that would allow for a Chick-fil-A to be built.

This is taking the 2015 zoning and updating it to the current standards that a Chick-fil-A requires. The rezoning will nearly double the amount of parking spaces from 35 to 64 spaces and more than double drive-thru car storage from 14 to 34 cars.

The executive summary of the traffic study said that based on data from six Chick-fil-A locations in Jacksonville, the restaurant is projected to generate:

  • 294 trips during the morning peak hour (147 in and 147 out)
  • 468 trips during the midday peak hour (234 in and 234 out)
  • 316 trips during the evening peak hour (155 in and 161 out)

The analysis showed that the addition of projected traffic will have a nominal impact on traffic operations and 2026 build conditions intersections will continue to operate at the same over Levels of Service (LOS).

When compared to 2026 No-Build Conditions, it said both site driveways will operate satisfactorily during the morning and evening peak hours for 2026 Build Conditions.

The study also noted that a Signal Warrant Analysis was done for Duval Station Road, Bradley Cove Road, and First Coast High School Driveway, showing that the intersection does not warrant a traffic signal in 2026 Build Conditions with anticipated growth in the area plus the traffic from the proposed Chick-fil-A development.

News4JAX is trying to set up an interview with a city traffic engineer to explain the traffic study and was told an interview wouldn’t be possible at the time of publishing this article. We are waiting for a response on if an interview is possible later this week.

The next hearing on April 16 for the proposed Chick-fil-A will center around the traffic study.
