JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A mother described how her life will forever be changed after her 7-year-old daughter drowned at a party held at a community pool in Argyle Forest on Saturday.
Wynter Mitchell’s mother, Tyra Mitchell, was completely devastated when she heard about her daughter.
She said her mother urged her to get to the hospital. Frantically, Mitchell rushed straight there.
“I didn’t know she had drowned. To get back there and I see them performing CPR. It broke my heart. I was so hurt. Even just seeing her like that. I was hurt,” she said.
According to News4JAX records, there have been over 60 drownings throughout Northeast Florida with 35 of those deaths involving pools, 14 were in ponds and the others were in oceans, rivers and lakes.
Wynter passed away the next morning, leaving her family with only the memories.
“Always watch your kids. Always watch them no matter what. Always put your children first. Don’t let them come second and always love them,” Mitchell said.
News4JAX spoke with Haraka Carswell with the Youth Giving Back Sports Mentor Program. She said the organization is looking to sponsor several children to teach them how to swim.
“It’s really important because its going to be a hot summer. And the pool is very, very exciting for kids, especially young kids when they see water. I feel is very important for them to learn how to swim at early age,” Carswell said.
