iPhone users experience brief text message outage Thursday

One the face of it, a short-term outage that made certain social media platforms temporarily unavailable would seem to not be worth more than a shrug or passing interest. But the widespread attention given to the blanking of Metas Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger platforms on Tuesday shows that it does matter. The issues began around 6:10 p.m. According to Downdetector, multiple cell phone carriers reported problems. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, iMessage, Facetime, and Apple Support all saw a large spike in outages during this time.

As of 6:30 p.m., it appeared the issues had been resolved, but not before causing panic on social media.

“My iPhone not sending text messages .. is it yall(’s) too?” one X user said.

“Looks like it’s a universal thing with the text messages.” another X user said.

In a reply to an X user, Verison acknowledged the issue and said they were working on the issue.

What caused the outage remains unclear. As of 7 p.m., Apple had not released a statement.
